Differences in Harry Potter movie and book wands

The Harry Potter movies have a very strong art direction that faithfully recreates the world of Harry Potter that any fan of the books would find hard to criticize. All of the characters, settings and costumes are faithfully recreated with incredible attention to detail.

When it comes to the wands, however, there are some interesting changes that have been made between how these magical instruments are depicted in print and on screen. The movie wands are far more visually interesting than the ones described in the book. In the written version, the wands are very simple and don't have the sophisticated engraving and styling you'll see on the big screen versions.

There's also far more variance in the way the wands appear on the screen. Each of the main characters has a very distinctive wand, which works well in the films. It is of course something that helps sales of wands - if they are all different, there's more to collect.

Another difference is the wands are slightly longer in the movies than in the books. This is one of the rare occasions where something has been improved in a movie. The film wand design is stunning - with each wand having it's own style, and reflecting the wizard's character.
