All about Wands!

In the Harry Potter Universe, created by J.K Rowling, wands are an integral part of every day Wizard life. They are used for everything from brewing potions, to combating other Wizards. They can be used for evil as well as good. Wands can even kill an opponent with the forbidden curse!

Each young Wizard is required to buy their wand prior to beginning their training at the Wizard school, Hogwarts. There are many laws set up governing the underage use of magic which can result in serious penalties or expulsion from Hogwarts. Later, if wizards commit serious crimes, they can have their wands destroyed.

Harry Potter Wands are created in the story from a combination of two elements. A special kind wood, and a central core. The wood varies and can be Holly, Yew, Ebony and more. The core can be anything from special feathers to unicorn hairs.

In the Harry Potter world, wands are traditionally purchased from Ollivander's Wand Shop. It's owner, Ollivander, is a mysterious character who plays a minor role in several of the books / movies. In the first story he takes great care to find Harry the correct wand. Each wizard's wand is particular to them. Using a wand that does not belong to you may have unpredictable or inferiour results.
